Before an aspirant embarks upon the practice of Self-enquiry, which is the cornerstone of Sri Ramana’steachings and the essence of the Upanishadic lore, it is extremely useful — if not essential — for him to have a clearand well-founded understanding of the theoretical background upon which the practice of Self-enquiry is based, and such an understanding is possibly not made available to aspirants anywhere so clearly as in this book, which elucidates many important aspects of Sri Ramana’s teachings. There was no English translation of this scripture until the present one was made by Munagala Venkataramiah (Swami Ramanananda Saraswathi) in 1938. This book is not to be picked up, read through and put
away. The verses are full of Divine nectar which will quench the thirst of any earnest seeker who repeatedly reflects on their meaning and in right earnest attempts to implement the teachings.

From the poem “The Sleeping Beauty”

“A pretty children’s tale is found
Of how a lady slept spell-bound
Through time’s long night, till for her sake
A daring rescuer should break
Through many perils and with a kiss
Wake her to endless bliss.”
