Most people’s lives unfold according to the egoic mind’s ideas, desires, and demands—their conditioning. You are programmed to believe the ideas that run throughyour mind. These ideas are a mix of useful, factual information andoutdated, prejudiced, and incorrect information and beliefs. Most people accept everything that runs through their mind as true, without questioning it. This brings a great deal of suffering because happiness cannot be found infollowing the false beliefs and values of the ego. Unhappiness is the certainresult of allowing the egoic mind to run your life.”

From the work:

“THE Divine Wisdom, that knows all things most fully, has deigned to reveal these her secrets to men, and in proof of them has displayed works beyond the competence of all natural powers, in the wonderful cure of diseases, in the raising of the dead, and what is more wonderful still, in such inspiration of human minds as that simple and ignorant persons, filled with the gift of the Holy Ghost, have gained in an instant the height of wisdom and eloquence.”

This volume of al-Kafi, which is about seven hundred pages, is considered to be a text of an interview with a person who possesses Divine authority. It is among Shia scholars an established fact that the words of Ahl al-Bayt, Allah’ Supreme Covenant Body, are in complete harmony. An interview with any one of them would serve as an interview with all and every one of them. To have an interview of that many words as those in this volume provides one a very good chance to know the personality of the person interviewed.

“Self-enquiry is the first work the Maharshi ever wrote. It was written about 1901, that is, when he was a young man of about twenty-two. He was already a Jnani (Sage) in perfect realization of the Self, in the resplendent bliss of Divine Knowledge. At that time he was living in Virupaksha Cave on the hill of Arunachala. A number of disciples had already gathered round him. Although he had not actually taken a vow of silence, he seldom spoke, and so wrote his replies to certain questions put to him by Gambhiram Seshayya, one of the earliest devotees. The latter copied them in his diary. After his death this diary was obtained from his brother. The questions and answers were edited by Natanananda and published with Bhagavan’s approval under the name of Vichara Sangraham, or Self-Enquiry. Subsequently they were changed into the form of an essay. The original form has been adopted in the present work.”
