Many years ago, I was writing a study of ‘Eros and Education in Plato’s Symposium”, I checked the Loeb translation against Jowett’s. What to my surprise to discover that Jowett had translated the Greek word SOMA as “soul”, undoubtedly because his Christian belief required it.
Why hasn’t Jowett’s translation been subjected to a thorough updated revision, except the Jowett Trust won’t agree to it?
“I am the great Benjamin Jowett. / What there is to know it.
I am Master of this college./ What I don’t know is not knowledge.”
