According to a legend preserved in the Book of Arda Viraf, a 3rd or 4th century work, a written version of The Zend Avesta had existed in the palace library of the Achaemenid kings (559–330 BC), but which was then supposedly lost in a fire caused by the troops of Alexander the Great. This is the complete Zend Avesta in English, a Public Domain version published in 1880 in Oxford.

What is Zoroastrianism?

Zoroastrianism is one of the world’s oldest monotheistic religions, with its origins dating back to ancient Persia around 3500 years ago. The religion was founded by the prophet Zoroaster, also known as Zarathustra, in what is now Iran.

The central belief in Zoroastrianism is in the worship of one God, referred to as Ahura Mazda. Ahura Mazda is seen as the creator of the universe and the source of all goodness and truth. The religion teaches that Ahura Mazda is opposed by Angra Mainyu, the source of all evil and darkness.

Zoroastrians believe in the concept of free will and personal responsibility. They believe that each individual has the power to choose between good and evil, and that through good deeds and actions, they can ultimately achieve salvation.

One of the key practices in Zoroastrianism is the recitation of prayers, called the Yasna, which are said to be a means of achieving a connection with God. The religion also places a strong emphasis on living a moral and ethical life, with virtues such as honesty, kindness, and generosity being highly valued.

Zoroastrianism has had a significant influence on other religions throughout history, including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. For example, the concept of the duality of good and evil can be seen in many religious traditions, and the idea of an individual’s personal responsibility for their actions is a common theme in many religions.

Today, Zoroastrianism is still practiced by a small community of followers, primarily located in India and Iran. The religion has faced significant challenges over the centuries, including persecution under various empires, but it continues to be an important part of the cultural and spiritual heritage of the region.

In conclusion, Zoroastrianism is one of the world’s oldest monotheistic religions, dating back to ancient Persia. It teaches the worship of one God, Ahura Mazda and emphasizes on the concept of free will and personal responsibility, living a moral and ethical life and the recitation of prayers. Zoroastrianism has had significant influence on other religions throughout history and continues to be an important part of the cultural and spiritual heritage of the region.

  1. Just thought it might be nice for some of us classic rock & roll fans that Freddie Mercury, of Queen, born Faroukh Bulsara, was a Zoroastrian, and the wonderful singer of multiple octaves was sent out of the earth in a traditional Zoroastrian funeral.

  2. Actually the ideas of the Bible came from Zoroastrianism and Zoroastrianism is older as it was founded about 3500 years before. Way before that Christianity.

  3. The Bible says, God visited the Gentiles first, in Acts 15:14-15.

It also says, The Scripture preached the gospel unto Abraham… 430 years before Moses wrote a word!

    Galatians 3:8,17
[8]And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

[17]And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.

  4. Yes. But the disagreement comes from whether or not that god hates Christians and Israelites. You can’t clump these religions together as if they are equally correct or valuable. If you read all of these books you will see that some religions believe very morally wrong things.

    • MAYBE everything is just dharma/karma in the infinite spinning wheel of time and space, some extremely advanced civilizations like to portray themselves as gods and they possibly created us with advanced genetic engineering, some individual souls come from the true god in eternal state of grace, love and glory which is reached through moksha, stopping the cycle of reincarnation, all the gives and takes of worldly life for the ultimate state of existence. GOOD THOUGHTS – GOOD WORDS – GOOD DEEDS.

      • The unsewn temple garments tradition Muslims have was inherited from the days when the world religion was Vedic.

Abraham was a Brahmin from Sumeria, and his cattle were from India.

The Bible says, Abraham was rich in cattle, it Cain’s grandson who is the father of all who keep cattle and dwell in tents: and in the Rig Veda 8:8 (in some translations) Indra was rich in cattle.

The Avestas were interpreted from the Vedas, and they’re from India too.

      • All Religion come from 1 Allah/GOD

The same Allah/GOD bring down Abraham, Krishna, Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha, Christ, Muhammad, The Báb, Baháʼu’lláh

They come for the time and understanding of the peoples to remind of Allah/GOD and his Teachings.

      • Religious truth is not absolute but relative, that Divine Revelation is a continuous and progressive process, that all the great religions of the world are divine in origin, that their basic principles are in complete harmony, that their aims and purposes are one and the same, that their teachings are but facets of one truth, that their functions are complementary, that they differ only in the nonessential aspects of their doctrines, and that their missions represent successive stages in the spiritual evolution of human society.

  7. How can we prove that Avesta is older then the Holy Bible? I think most of written ideas comes from the Bible? Those ideas might be transmitted by the scattered Jewish during their exile.

      • Sorry, there are mistakes in the above message due to self suggestions of the electronic system.
All the prophets followed the instructions from the same God, therefore, there are some similarities among their teachings. It is clearly obvious that there are some fundamentals which are universal. Other things are time and space dependent.

          • That is a bit rude. I agree with Shafique. For example when they sat in the Quran that lamps will fall from the heavens does not mean that directly, as it was intended for the people of the time. It means that asteriods would fall onto the erath from space.

    • it is older than the bible, in fact the jews where polytheists before they where liberated by Kurush(Cyrus ) from Babylon. they used El’ohim to refer to god, but that is an plural form. the firt Jew that writte about one god was Issac, after the liberation. So most of the base ideas in the whole Judeo-cristian tradition are a copy of mazdayasna. One god the fight betwen good and evil the messiah and of course the final judgment

What did we chose in our body’s life, Hate or Love.
Most of the people now are ruled by Hate, Fear, and Terror, billions.
USA was the flame, the light of the Globe, not anymore!
So what will be the final judgement, the 6th Extinction?

  8. Zand is neither a language nor a style. This is an old Iranian language (Old Persian) word, meaning “Interpretation” or “Explanation”. It means that Avesta was not written in Persian. As we know, Zoroaster was basically from the present day Loralai or Zhob district of Balochistan, inhabited by Pashtoon ethnicity, therefore, it comes clear that Avesta was written in Pashto.

    • Dear Kamran, not any I am aware of. I expect that you need a clean text version for searching. In that case I would suggest that you convert the PDF to a text readable version, then copy the text to a word document for further research. There is a number of tools for that out there. Adobe has some solutions, but you can also find some freewares.
