From the foreword of G. I. Gurdjieff’s “Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson”:
“All written according to entirely new principles of logical reasoning and directed toward the accomplishment of the following three fundamental tasks: FIRST SERIES To destroy, mercilessly and without any compromise whatever, in the mentation and feelings of the reader, the beliefs and views, by centuries rooted in him, about everything existing in the world. SECOND SERIES To acquaint the reader with the material required for a new creation and to prove the soundness and good quality of it. THIRD SERIES To assist the arising, in the mentation and in the feelings of the reader, of a veritable, nonfantastic representation not of that illusory world which he now perceives, but of the world existing in reality.”
Beelzebub’s Tales is included in Martin Seymour-Smith‘s 100 Most Influential Books Ever Written, with the comment that it is “…the most convincing fusion of Eastern and Western thought has yet been seen.

Beelzebubs Tales to His Grandson by G I Gurdjieff
“Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson” is the seminal work of the influential spiritual teacher and mystic G.I. Gurdjieff. Published in 1950, this book is the first volume of his trilogy “All and Everything”, and it stands as a cornerstone of Gurdjieff’s philosophical teachings and esoteric insights.
The narrative is uniquely structured as a series of discourses delivered by the character Beelzebub to his grandson Hassein during their interstellar travels aboard the spaceship Karnak. Through these tales, Gurdjieff delves into the intricacies of human psychology, the nature of the cosmos, and the existential challenges facing humanity. The stories are rich with allegory and symbolism, designed to provoke deep reflection and self-examination in the reader.
Gurdjieff employs a distinctive and intentionally challenging writing style, incorporating complex language and neologisms to engage readers actively and encourage them to question their preconceived notions. This approach is part of his broader teaching methodology, which emphasizes the importance of conscious effort and personal struggle in the pursuit of spiritual awakening.
Key themes explored in “Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson” include the mechanical nature of human existence, the potential for individuals to transcend their habitual patterns, and the significance of understanding universal laws. Gurdjieff critiques the shortcomings of modern society, religion, and science, suggesting that humanity has lost touch with essential truths and higher knowledge.
The book introduces readers to Gurdjieff’s concept of “The Work,” a path of self-development aimed at achieving a higher state of consciousness and being. He underscores the necessity of self-observation, inner work, and the harmonization of one’s intellectual, emotional, and physical centers.
“Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson” is more than just a philosophical text; it is a transformative experience intended to awaken readers to new levels of awareness. Its profound insights have had a lasting impact on spiritual thought, influencing subsequent generations of seekers, philosophers, and psychologists.
This work is recommended for those interested in esoteric spirituality, self-inquiry, and the deeper questions of existence. While demanding, the rewards of engaging with Gurdjieff’s teachings are significant, offering the potential for personal growth and a renewed understanding of one’s place in the universe.

where’s the pdf file? i cant find it anywhere. please
Rewired my brain. Myself and friends thought we could begin a forth way house about 1967, and had so many insights. Been my main preoccupation ever since. I favor John G Bennett’s work to go onward and develop the ‘work’ in ever more intimate and able-to-be-familiarized ways.
Ideally many different forms of the work would be part of the journey – you could start with Ouspensky but eventually for the heart to open its work with Mme De Salzman’s work that assists. Ideally gather a couple of friends and start a group – without Group, Ideas and Physical work – the work could get intellectually lopsided.
All and Everything is the single most influential book in my life. I followed the author’s suggestion and read it three times. The last reading was aloud to a recorder…30 minutes of reading everyday for exactly 100 days. What a trip! Reading this book so completely has changed my world view, softened my outlook on the antics of humankind and helped my be more equanimous. It’s all just impersonal phenomena rolling on…far beyond the scope of our normal understanding.
I encounter Gurdjieff frequently in books, libraries, and literature. I have read and read and read All and Everything and found it defective. I am quite sure that the edition I got on inter-library loan of Beelzebub’s Tales To His Grandson was abridged.
The “Foundation” in New York, totally bowdlerize his book and abbreviated it by 100 page…changed and left out key word…for example in the AUTHENTIC book copyright 1950…chapter seven. pages 77, 76 and 78 he tells “it is indispensably necessary” for you to contemplate the morning rising sun as you remember your self…as you TELL YOUR UNCONSCIUS TO ASSITS YOU. IN YOUR WORK EFFORTS…SO I STRTED DOIN
G THAT IN 1962. IT WORKS!!!! THE FOUNDATIO BOOK LEFT KEY WORDS OUT…IT IS A TRAVESTY, AND THERE WILL BE KARMIC KONSEQUENCES…
I know about the forthway
