This ebook On Education is the outcome of talks and discussions held in India by J. Krishnamurti with the students and teachers of schools at Rishi Valley School in Andhra Pradesh and Rajghat School at Varanasi. These centres are run by the Krishnamurti Foundation India, which was set up to create a milieu where the teachings of Krishnamurti could be communicated to the child. Krishnamurti regards education as of prime significance in the communication of that which is central to the transformation of the human mind and the creation of a new culture.
On Education by Jiddu Krishnamurti presents a transformative vision of the educational process, one that moves beyond the mere transmission of information and rote learning. Rather than reinforcing social conformity and conditioning, Krishnamurti argues that education should awaken the mind’s innate capacity to question, inquire, and perceive without bias. He invites teachers, parents, and students to explore learning as a continuous, dynamic process that fosters self-understanding, empathy, and a sense of responsibility to the world.
Reshaping our approach to learning
Central to Krishnamurti’s philosophy is the conviction that true education is rooted in freedom—freedom from fear, authority, and the psychological burdens that inhibit direct perception. By encouraging individuals to confront their own prejudices and assumptions, education becomes a means of cultivating clarity, creativity, and moral integrity. In On Education, Krishnamurti’s dialogues and insights serve as a guide for reshaping our approach to learning, ensuring that young minds can grow into individuals who are not only intellectually capable, but also emotionally balanced, ethically grounded, and genuinely compassionate.
