The Tawasin of Mansur Al-Hallaj

Author of The Tawasin, Mansur Al-Hallaj was a Persian mystic, revolutionary writer and teacher of Sufism most famous for his apparent, but disputed, self-proclaimed divinity, his poetry and for his execution for heresy at the orders of the Abbasid Caliph Al-Muqtadir after a long, drawn-out investigation. The Afghan Sufi scholar Idries Shah suggested that Mansur al-Hallaj might have been the origin of the character Hiram Abiff in the Freemasonic Master Mason ritual. The Tawasin is a deeply mystical and poetic work by the renowned Sufi saint Mansur Al-Hallaj (858–922 CE). This book is a collection of esoteric writings exploring themes of divine love, unity (tawhid), and spiritual annihilation (fana). Known for his controversial and ecstatic proclamations—most famously “Ana al-Haqq” (I am the Truth)—Al-Hallaj’s writings have been both revered and condemned throughout Islamic history.

This work contains allegorical and symbolic discussions that attempt to articulate the ineffable nature of divine reality. The Tawasin uses intricate language, visual symbols, and philosophical paradoxes to express Al-Hallaj’s profound insights. The book is divided into several sections, each named “Ta-Sin,” a cryptic reference to Arabic letters that hold mystical significance.

Some of the key topics covered in The Tawasin include:

  • The Nature of the Prophet Muhammad (Ta-Sin of the Prophetic Lamp), where Al-Hallaj describes the Prophet as the light from which all other lights emanate.
  • The Spiritual Trials of Iblis (Satan) (Ta-Sin of Understanding), offering a unique perspective on Satan’s refusal to bow to Adam—not as an act of disobedience, but as unwavering devotion to divine unity.
  • The Mystical Journey of the Seeker (Ta-Sin of the Point), describing the soul’s progression toward ultimate annihilation in God.
  • The Concept of Divine Unity (Tawhid), which Al-Hallaj presents as beyond human comprehension, warning against limiting God through definitions and logic.

Through these enigmatic and visionary writings, The Tawasin challenges readers to transcend intellectual limitations and experience the divine directly. The text is a cornerstone of Sufi thought, influencing generations of mystics, poets, and scholars.
