The Essence of Tibetan Buddhism by Lama Thubten Yeshe consists of three teachings. The first one, “The Three Principal Aspects of the Path,” was given in France in 1982, during an sponsored tour of Europe by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Just before His Holiness’s scheduled teachings at Institut Vajra Yogini, His Holiness manifested illness and asked Lama Yeshe to fill in for a couple of days— to “baby-sit” the audience, as Lama put it. This two-part teaching on three principal aspects of the path is the result. The second teaching, an “Introduction to Tantra,” also in two parts, was given at Grizzly Lodge, California, in 1980. It comprises the first two lectures of a commentary on the Chenrezig yoga method taught by Lama at the request of Vajrapani Institute,
Boulder Creek.
The book delves into the fundamentals of the tantric path, explaining how tantra differs from other forms of Buddhism and how it can be integrated into one’s spiritual practice. Lama Yeshe discusses the nature of the mind, emphasizing the potential for transformation and enlightenment inherent within every individual. He provides guidance on meditation practices, mindfulness, and the cultivation of compassion and wisdom.
Throughout the text, Lama Yeshe addresses common misconceptions about tantra and Tibetan Buddhism, offering clarifications that help demystify these profound teachings. He encourages readers to engage in self-exploration and to apply the principles of Tibetan Buddhism in practical ways to enhance their daily lives.
The Essence of Tibetan Buddhism serves as both an introduction for newcomers and a valuable resource for seasoned practitioners seeking to deepen their understanding. Lama Yeshe’s teachings emphasize the importance of inner development, ethical conduct, and the interconnectedness of all beings.
