The Magus, or Celestial Intelligencer by Francis Barrett is a seminal work on the occult sciences, first published in 1801. This comprehensive text serves as both a practical guide and a theoretical exploration of various esoteric traditions, including alchemy, astrology, ceremonial magic, and the Kabbalah. It synthesizes knowledge from earlier mystical and magical texts, making it a cornerstone for students of Western occultism.
Barrett’s work is structured into multiple sections, detailing magical theory, the properties of herbs and stones, the invocation of spirits, and astrological correspondences. It also includes extensive references to classical and medieval sources, such as Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy, making it a valuable resource for understanding the historical development of magical practices.
In addition to its practical instructions, The Magus emphasizes the moral and spiritual responsibilities of the practitioner, advocating for the use of magic as a means of achieving wisdom and harmony with the divine. Its influence is evident in later esoteric movements, including the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and modern ceremonial magic traditions.
The Magus, or Celestial Intelligencer remains an essential text for those interested in the history and practice of the occult, offering timeless insights into the mysteries of the natural and spiritual worlds.

It has been said this is more or less a word for word copy Barrett did of Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy. I do agree that might be, but prepared for those of a wider audience so it can be read by same without the trouble of attempting to get Agrippa’s work which could be costly at the time.
